NORTHRIDGE – A week after he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, CSUN Baseball’s Albee Weiss has received ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team honors, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday. Capping off a memorable career with the Matadors last month, Weiss is the first Matadors to earn all-region accolades since 2002.

A senior outfielder, Weiss enjoyed a career season with the Matadors in 2018. The Oak Park native finished the regular season fourth in the nation (sixth currently) in home runs with 20. A two-time all-conference selection, Weiss recieved All-Big West First Team honors for the first time in his four-year Matador career. Weiss finished tops in the Big West in home runs, total bases (141), RBI (61) and slugging percentage (.592), which were all career highs. He also posted new personal bests in batting average (.290), runs (37), hits (69) and on-base percentage (.324).

Weiss racked up a team-high 15 multiple-RBI games along with 17 multiple-hit efforts. He hit two home runs in four different contests including a pair against No. 16 UCLA on March 14. His second homer against the Bruins was a walk-off shot in the 13th inning in a 4-3 victory. Weiss also hit a game-winning three-run home run at UC Santa Barbara in the 12th inning on May 6.

He became just the 10th Matador in team history to hit at least 20 homers in a season since 1997. In the history of the program, Weiss is tied for third all time with John Balfanz (1985-87) with 42 career home runs. However, Weiss is second in home runs, behind only Adam Kennedy (1995-97), in the team’s Division I era. Weiss is also tied for fifth place with Jason Shanahan (1992-95) in career RBI (153).

In each season with the Matadors, Weiss improved his batting average, runs, hits, home runs and on-base percentage totals. He began his Matador career hitting .199 as a freshman but improved that mark nearly a full 100 points by his senior season.

On June 6, Weiss heard his name called at the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft as he was selected in the 23rd round (694th overall) by the Twins. Earlier in the draft, the Twins also chose the Matadors’ junior catcher Trevor Casanova in the 13th round (394th overall).
