The Master’s University men’s golf team played well enough to win but couldn’t keep up with a hard-charging Claremont squad and finished second at the TMU Spring Invitational played at the Sand Canyon Country Club over the past two days.
“As a team, we’re focused on the progress of improving each week and we saw that this week by finishing second,” said TMU head coach Jason Semelsberger.
After shooting a tournament-leading 294 on Monday, the Mustangs shot a 306 in the second round and still led by two strokes with 18 holes to play.
However, Claremont caught fire in the final round, carding a tournament-best 283 to the Mustangs’ 297 mark to win by 12 shots. The Stags concluded the event with a combined 885, 21-over par score while the Mustangs shot a combined 897, 33-over par.
On the individual side, TMU’s Sam Eisenhuth finished third, shooting a sparkling, 3-under par 213 in the 54-hole event. After leading the field with a 3-under 69 on the opening day, the senior shot a 71 in the second round and a 73 to close out an excellent two days of golf.
“It is exciting to have Sam play well again this week,” Semelsberger said.
Next up for the Mustangs is the Battle at Primm (NV) on March 19 and 20.
