Starting Monday night, Oct. 16, the California Department of Transportation will paint new temporary lanes on a section of Interstate 5 aka the Golden State Freeway in and near the city of Santa Clarita, where a two-year, $171 million repaving project has been underway since July.
The changes will begin at 9 p.m. Monday and are scheduled to be completed by 5 a.m. Tuesday. The schedule is weather-permitting and is subject to change.
Caltrans urges drivers to allow extra travel time and exercise caution in the area with the new temporary lanes.
The changes Monday night will eliminate temporary “split lanes” that diverged around a work area in the center of the freeway’s southbound side. Starting Tuesday, drivers will find a new arrangement of four adjacent lanes shifted toward the median on the southbound I-5 between Lyons Avenue and south of Calgrove Boulevard.
Crews also are working on the northbound side of the freeway. The I-5 Roadway Rehabilitation Project is replacing and repairing concrete pavement on nearly 16 miles of the Golden State Freeway from State Route 14 (the Antelope Valley Freeway) to north of Lake Hughes Road.
The construction phase of the project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019. Much of the work is being done at night, with some lanes closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Lower speed limits are posted in the construction area. Traffic fines are doubled in construction areas, and the California Highway Patrol is on duty.
Guy F. Atkinson Construction is the contractor on the project, which has state and federal funding. Information about the I-5 Roadway Rehabilitation Project in North Los Angeles County/Santa Clarita is available online [here]
Caltrans reminds drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert.”

Rachael Eaton, glad you live in Northridge now…?
Whoever designed this should be fired….seriously
This is total complete BS.
Sammantha Taylor Kyle Swinehart getting rid of the split!
So let’s build more houses and condos and make Awesome Town even more awesome! Don’t think about the fact that the roads in Awesome Town were not designed to accommodate more traffic than there was in the late 1980’s!
Should have dedicated that stretch of freeway to Obama…
Explain please. What did he have to do with it? I think it should be dedicated to our amazing President Trump who is MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!! WHAT A HERO!!

Can you say ‘sigalert”….
Yeah, every day.
Its always something….(knock on wood)….not sure how much more traffic or new construction of homes this area can withstand before it’s total gridlock…by the time they finish this project it’s gonna be time to start all over and rethink things….?

Thank you for all your hard work.
this is supposed to take place Monday night thru Tuesday morning
They’ll still stuff it up
I remember a simpler time when valencia blvd and Mcbean pkwy had smaller bridges going over the 5.
Also with all the construction going on now it makes traffic a whole lot worse. What exactly are they doing
I remember Soledad when it was 2 lanes and just a 4-way stop sign at Bouquet Junction. If there were 2 cars in front of us at the stop sign we were like, WTH! And the big oak tree at Lyons and Orchard, a river that had water in it 9 to 10 months out of the year and raged so mightily it took out bridges on Bouquet and Sand Canyon. I was stuck on Soledad once as the river began taking out the roadway and cops had both lanes against the other side of the roadway as the river claimed it. And the list goes on…..
Me too, Pauline.
Wait till all the homes go up off of 126. It’ll make the 405 desirable for once.

I’m curious as to why this is being done. Unforeseen problems with the lane split? That should be covered in this story.
