Vasquez High school’s long-awaited new campus is well on its way to being completed, school officials said.
Pending board approval, all of the students will begin attending classes in the new buildings beginning in the fall, said Ty Devoe, Vasquez High’s principal, noting the groundbreaking was about a year ago.
The funding for the school is something Acton Agua Dulce Unified School District officials worked on for years, Devoe said.
The plan was always to have a new, more permanent campus, but it took several tries for the district to gain voter approval for its bond measure. During the Great Recession, state officials froze matching funds, delaying the money necessary for the district to progress on Phase two until a few months ago.
There are two, possibly three phases to the new campus master plans, Devoe said. Phase one is having all classrooms, a library and an administrative building be completed.
“Phase one being completed enables all of the school’s daily functions to be completely moved to the new location,” Devoe said, adding the projected date is Sept. 8.
There is also a new entrance to the school being added off of Escondido road, making pick up and drop off much easier.
Phase two, which has a foundation slated to be poured next week, includes a gym, equipped with a stage, weight room, locker rooms, cafeteria and a whole lot more.
Devoe is excited to be able to host more events and activities for the students on their home campus.
The gym is a huge improvement, because the school has been paying to use a gym at a junior high school in Palmdale for the last three years, Devoe said.
School officials and students are excited to hold rallies in the new gym, because up until now, rallies have always been held outside, and if the weather was bad, they had to be canceled.
“We’re excited to give these students a complete and rich high school experience,” Devoe said. “Students are really excited and proud.”
School officials plan to continue utilizing the existing fields, but a possible phase three that is being discussed is the plan to expand and update all fields, Devoe said.
“The girls softball team has been using a local park,” Devoe said.
Vasquez High School was established in 1993, with the first graduating class walking in 1997, Devoe said.
The school has about 400 students right now and school officials expect some growth over the summer. The high school has also improved its retention rate to 97 percent, Devoe added.
The new campus will be able to accommodate up to 1000 students, Devoe said.
“There are some people who moved here well over a decade ago and were promised a High School for their toddlers, and that didn’t happen,” Devoe said. “This is a big deal to our community, many people now feel a real sense of resolution and satisfaction with the new school.”
