vote results

citylogo_sealThe City of Santa Clarita is seeking community feedback on a public safety grant proposal for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. All public comments must be received by Friday, June 19, 2015.

The City of Santa Clarita is eligible to receive $21,681 from the U.S. Department of Justice’s JAG program, which is aimed at enhancing public safety. JAG allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime, based on local needs and conditions. Funds may be used for hiring, training and maintaining personnel, as well as for equipment, supplies and more to improve overall crime prevention.

“JAG funding allows the City and Sheriff’s Department to continue successful crime prevention programs and explore new ways to further enhance public safety in Santa Clarita,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “The City is providing an opportunity for residents to weigh in on the proposed programs and services outlined in the grant application before it is submitted.”

Proposed operations and strategies include, but are not limited to:

* Efficient technology

* DUI enforcement

* Gang enforcement

* Drug enforcement

* Vandalism and graffiti enforcement

* Probation/parole enforcement

* Unique patrol methods (T3, bike, foot and off-road) to patrol areas not easily accessible by patrol cars, such as parks, trails, paseos and the Santa Clara river

* Addressing daytime burglaries and other crimes perpetrated by minors

* Addressing the pawning or resale of stolen property

* Surveillance, undercover and sting operations, as needed

For more information on the JAG Grant application or to view and comment on the proposal, visit Santa-Clarita.com/index.aspx?page=510 or contact Jerrid McKenna at (661) 255-4921 or jmckenna@santa-clarita.com.

    Day time burglaries, gangs and drugs. Often connected crimes that include probation/ parole. So any of these would be covered by one or the other in the end. Would get the most value this way.

  2. Ilene Anderson says:

    Perhaps support in the mental health area should be added to that list.

  3. If you click on the link shown in the headline it will bring you to a place where you can submit an official comment at the bottom.

  4. Kory Abel says:

    Less of a police presence to not induce fear in citizens would be nice

  5. Jose Amaya says:

    How much back up do police officer need ?

    • Sean Hollis says:

      Thinking the same lol

    • There’s a nest in there . Arrest the management for allowing too many living in one apt. It’s illegal and many are illegal. Put a satellite station in that complex and foot patrol 24 hrs a day. If that were happening on Lyons, it wouldn’t be tolerated. Then the west side people keep putting the problem out there like it’s not in their city. If half the officers in this valley were stationed on the west side of this city. Crime would go down there and jump up on the west side. Boy would your hear whining then.FIX IT! Don’t just write about it!

  6. Brad Bergman says:

    Everywhere……….

  7. Conway says:

    The sheriffs can find plenty of criminals off of Sierra Hwy & Jake’s Way in Canyon Country.

  8. Dorene Tapp says:

    I dislike the derogatory comments about our law enforcement officers. SCV would not be a decent place to live without them doing their jobs. Did you people see the destruction and the utter chaos in Baltimore because the police were told to “stand down”? Is that what you want here?

  9. Unique patrol methods. It’s sad that the bike trails are unsafe to bike alone on.

  10. Jim Oge Jr says:

    Wow so much to say, well drugs are out of control in this town along with fireworks that will happen on the fourth , even though the law enforcement puts out the annual threat you want to stop crime arm citizens give out CCW’s to law abiding citizens. An armed society is a safe society.

  11. Jim Oge Jr says:

    Bike trails need undercover officers on them

  12. Tommy Rini says:

    Your mamma’s, mamma’s, mamma

  13. dennis valentino says:

    ANY ONE WHO GIVES UP LIBERTY FOR SECURITY DESERVES NEITHER OF THEM “BENJAMIN FRANKLIN”WAKE UP AND KNOW YOUR CONSTITUTION!!!

  14. Kurt Buck says:

    City Hall and the Sheriffs dept is a good start.

  15. It should fight DUIs but not through those silly check points that violates the 4th amendment of our constitution. Quit being lazy and go get drunk drivers.

  16. natalie says:

    How about sensitivity training for the Sheriff’s Dept.? There is a problem in the way some of these cops treat law abiding members of the community. Two years working at a jail and then released into the community to treat everyone as if they are inmates. Keep the guards inside the jail. They don’t belong out here in society racially profiling. I have seen an officer pull a gun on a 11 year old kid who was running home because his mother called him. The cop took it as he was running from the law and actually pulled a gun on the kid. Unbelievable.

  17. Daniel Leedy says:

    First get the sheriff to issue permits since it is illegally his choice, keep cracking down on drugs, and enforce speed limits in residential areas.

  18. What’s wrong with the Paseos/bike trails? Years ago when I used them the seemed safe.

  19. Put pressure on the homeless drug addicts to move back to the SFV or the AV. Tired of being asked for a handout all over town.

  20. A police station branch needs to be on the south and east side of this valley! We’re too big, too populated and too much traffic for having only one station. Takes too long to get to 911 calls.Satellite stationswould help, and picking up illegals and deporting them!! We’re being over whelmed with gangs! Also we need a 24 hr. Emergency facility on the east side too. Good help for animals and so little for people. That’s crazy. Are we not taxpayers the same as the west side residents? Stop more parks,hire more officers!

  21. Jeanne says:

    I don’t want to see our kids bothered for just walking down the street. That is their idea of “proactive” Policing.

    Don’t use it for DUI checkpoints. This is just a way for them to get overtime.

    Use the money for bike trails etc. and over by Jakes way maybe a little station with walking or biking patrols.

  22. The aqueduct at night !

  23. DONTTRIP says:

    Truth is the sheriffs are lazy and don’t wanna ride bikes especially when its over 80 degrees LOL and really your getting tired of pple asking for handouts? Thats only your problem lady, get real. I’m getting tired of YOU people.

  24. Let clean up the wash! And jakes way

  25. MaKenna Ledingham says:

    How about we get rid of the rent-a-cop sheriffs and get an actual POLICE DEPARTMENT that’ll do their job.

  26. Doug Pearson says:

    Where is this beautiful uncongested place with reasonably spaced buildings that is depicted in the scv seal above?patrol Jakes way & the wash- you know-where most the body’s turn up
