After a long time away from home, the Santa Clarita Storm finally returned to The Masters University on Saturday night.
Santa Clarita faced off with the Ontario Fury II FC and after a slow start in the first half, the Storm came back in the 2nd half with a fury to wrap up the 3 points walking away with a 3-0 win.
The first-half about equal with the Storm holding a slight percentage of the passion and a larger amount of scoring opportunities. In the 8th minute came the first good opportunity and it was defender Pablo Nunez with the ball and slipped a pass up the line to midfielder Andres Zalamea who traveled up to right and a shot saved by the Fury keeper.
In the 15th minute, it was Fabian Garcia from the right side with a long shot on target but again turned away by the keeper. Midfielder Nelson Paraza in the 24th minute with a clear opportunity from afar that just went over the crossbar. The storm kept the pressure on throughout the half and so did Ontario as they had several opportunities. The 38th minute was one of the attacking visitors managed to get past the Storm defenders and from just 18 charged into the net with a shot that was quickly turned away by Storm keeper Kyle Cunningham. The Storm came back again and yet another on-target shot by Fabian Garcia but just off target and the half remained even.
In the 2nd-half Storm Coach, Oscar Moreno changed a few things around like bringing in Captain Brett Croft in at the Striker spot then put newcomer Daniel Morales in the back defending and brought in Miguel Torres to the midfield and Sargon Barkowi.
The Storm came on in the 2nd-half strong as in the 46th minute Coach Moreno’s switch up front with Croft almost paid off as Croft received a pass from the kickoff that he quickly shot on target but knocked down by the keeper. On the counter the Fury had a clear breakaway and made a hard on target shot from distance, never going to get passed Cunningham from a distance as he quickly extinguished and threat.
In the 54th minute of play, Storm was attacking the whistle was blown and a foul called in the Fury’s box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Storm. Croft took the shot from the spot and pushed the net for a 1 goal lead. Just 6 minutes later the visitors had passion and a clear chance without a defender in the area, but with wishful thinking stopped and took a long shot from 25 yards and made it easy for Cunningham to gather it in. Ontario Fury II FC picked up the pace and was finding ways to create opportunities such as in the 67th minute had a clear opportunity on target but just another disappointment as they watch Cunningham put on another keeper clinic earning his clean sheet.
As the Storm continued to attack they collected a couple of fouls one taken by Sargon Barkowi who from 18 yards out on target but on target to the keeper as well. Then in the 86th minute while attacking the Storm awarded a corner took and it was the Storm defenders that came in the add to the score. As newcomer Daniel Morales took the corner and made a perfect kick the found the head of defender Francisco Osuna that gave the Storm a two-goal lead late in the game. However, just two minutes later Storm continued to attack and, on another corner, kick this time taken by defender Pablo Nunez placed it perfectly to Miguel Torres and sealed the three points with a 3-goal lead and just a minute to go.
