[KHTS] – Saugus High School students are holding a craft and neon dance event, Pass It On Like Neon: A Path to Kindness, on May 10, school officials announced Friday.  

The event is being held by the students of the SHS Students Matter club and gives elementary, junior high and high school students the opportunity to create craft projects with friends and family to give to someone who may need “an act of kindness.”

Fun activities like interactive demonstrations, a DJ and dancing under neon lights for the older students are also planned for the day, event officials said.

“Our club, Students Matter, has been doing random acts of kindness like giving out candy-grams or scheduling movie nights,” said Mita Meza, the club’s advisor and teacher at Saugus High. “Bullying doesn’t just appear in high school or junior high, it happens at elementary school age too… We decided to reach out to elementary school kids and focus on kindness, having the ripple effect going on to their friends so we’re making kindness contagious as it passes on to the next person and the next one.”

Teams of two will visit eight stations, each representing a letter from the word ‘kindness,’ and create different art crafts at each one, she said. Students can take their completed projects home and pass them out to people in need of kindness in the days following the event.

There will also be a silent auction with raffle winners, tumbling and tae kwon do demonstrations and a special station where students can make something for their mothers in honor of Mother’s Day.

Older students are encouraged to wear neon-colored shirts and end the day dancing to music played by a DJ under neon lights.

While all the students of the Students Matters club worked together to organize the event, Krista Hornsby was the lead student who helped organize the event, Meza said.

“Krista is a graduating senior and this is her first event,” she said. “She’s done so much. She follows through on everything and is creative. When we have to get stuff done, she finds a way to get it done. She’s not stopped or blocked by challenges– she will plow through it.”

Older students are encouraged to invite family and friends to the event, and elementary school students must bring an adult. Students can register a team of two people for $15 by downloading the form at the club’s website and dropping it off with their payment at the administration office at the school, or by mailing it to the school, being sure to address it to Students Matter, event officials said.

Participants who register by May 7 will receive a bag of “goodies” like coupons and food items, but attendees can also register at the door.

The elementary school event and silent auction is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m., and the junior high and high school event from 5 to 7 p.m., on May 10 at the Saugus High School campus.
