On a motion by 5th District Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to increase law enforcement services for the county’s unincorporated areas.
The supervisors allocated $7.3 million for 67 sworn positions for the unincorporated areas. Twenty-five will be deployed to Altadena, Santa Clarita, Antelope and Crescenta Valley Stations.
Amended motion by Supervisor Antonovich (approved):
In April of this year, the Sheriff’s Department issued their Unincorporated Area Patrol Assessment which compared service levels between 2010 and 2013 and concluded that an increase of 118 sworn positions, at an annual estimated cost of $19.5 million, was necessary.
On September 30, 2014, the Chief Executive Officer issued a report in support of phasing in the additional personnel over a two-year period and recommended approval of Phase I. Phase I consists of 67 sworn positions, specifically 65 Deputy Sheriff Generalists and two Deputy Sheriff Bonus-I positions for a total cost of $12.4 million.
Accordingly, the board set aside $12.4 million (the annualized cost) in the Provisional Financing Uses pending additional information from the Sheriff regarding the delivery of patrol services which was received on October 20th. Given that there are six months left in the fiscal year, the amount necessary to begin implementation now is $7.3 million.
I, THEREFORE, MOVE that the Board of Supervisors transfer $7.3 million (which covers December through end of the fiscal year) of the annualized cost of $12.4 million from the Provisional Financing Uses, set aside for this purpose on September 30th, to the Sheriff’s Unincorporated Area Patrol Services Budget Unit to implement Phase I of increased patrol services based on the Sheriff’s Unincorporated Area Patrol Assessment issued in April of 2014.
