Santa Clarita’s favorite nightlife events continue this August as the Thursdays @ Newhall series, presented by Galpin Subaru, returns with new themes for Art SLAM, JAM Sessions and SENSES.
On Thursday, August 7 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Art SLAM pays homage to the ‘80s punk movement with live demonstrations, music and art exhibits. The event will feature an array of artwork, including an interactive “My Reason Wall” tattoo photography exhibit inviting attendees to take photos of their tattoos and explain the inspiration behind them. Guests can also browse artist Tom Neas’ art collection of punk rock legends, live model paintings with local artists Melanie Florio and Suzi Kades, and dynamic layered art stenciling with Pablo Cevallos. DJ’s from underground radio station K.S.S.R will spin ‘80s punk anthems, and ‘80s punk bands Channel 3 and Shattered Faith will perform mosh-worthy tunes for attendees.
The interactive, family-focused, musical movement JAM Sessions will feature a night filled with West African dancing and drumming by the CalArts African Music and Dance Ensemble on Thursday, August 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. With a unique selection of significant pieces lined up, the ensemble will perform a traditional repertoire from the Ewe and Dagomba people of Ghana. This FREE session is presented in partnership with the Ford Theatre Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation and the City of Santa Clarita. To learn more, visit FordJamSessions.org.
Back by popular demand, SENSES will morph Main Street into a free, disco-themed dance club on Thursday, August 21 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. complete with fun activities and gourmet food trucks. The psychedelic theme, selected by Santa Clarita residents via social media, will bring the energy of Studio 54 to Old Town Newhall with flashing strobe lights and the groovy dance tunes of the Disco era’s hottest bands, including the Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, and The Village People.
