FULLERTON – The Master’s University The Master’s University team lost their 2017 season opener at the HIU Summer Slam in straight sets Wednesday against the Warriors from national powerhouse Corban University (OR).
Thirteen kills by sophomore opposite Jane Cisar (Albuquerque, NM) and 35 team digs were not enough to stop the Corban Warriors, who took the match 25-17, 25-20, 25-23.
“This was a great learning match for us, playing the 9th ranked team in the nation,” head coach Allan Vince commented after the loss.
“We are young this year, but have deep talent, so matches against experienced teams like this help build a foundation for the program we want to be this season. We were very pleased with the new athletes on the roster and expect great things from them in the coming matches,” he said.
Coach Vince enters his fourth year as head coach of the Mustangs, coming off back-to-back 20 win seasons.
Cisar led the Mustangs in attempts (24) and kills (13) for a .375 hitting percentage. Junior setter and 2016 NAIA All-American Kayla Sims (Anchorage, AK) and sophomore setter Sarah Park (Porter Ranch, CA) ran their offense with 14 and 18 assists respectively, with Sims adding 6 digs.
In game three, the Mustangs opened strong with a run of five points, but were unable to hold their momentum against Corban University’s Adriana Aguayo, a sophomore outside hitter who led both teams with 15 kills.
Here’s the box score.
