The West Ranch High School Stock Market club won an international stock market competition April 30 at the Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia.
The six students in the club went against 300 teams from around the world in a competition that started in December. The top 12 teams were invited to the prestigious University of Pennsylvania business school to make their final presentation. The West Ranch club was awarded first place after this presentation.
The students in the club are Drake Walker, Min Jae King, Sam Hassanzadeh, Jason Del Rosario, Tristan Esquivez, and Giann Espino.
“I’m ecstatic over our win,” said Linda Cox, business and economics teacher at West Ranch. “I think we won due to the student’s professionalism and cohesive teamwork. They were focused and in it to win it.”
Each club was presented with creating a portfolio for Jack Abraham, a Wharton graduate who created and sold Milo.com for $75 million. Each club had to create a fictitious investment firm that was pitching to win his account. They assumed the role of financial analysts, created investment recommendations, discussed their strategy, ethics and team dynamics.
The teams invested $100,000 in simulated trades over a 12-week period. After presenting mid-term reports on February 13 and their final 47-page report on March 27, the team was selected to fly to Philadelphia to make their final presentation to a five-member panel from the investment firm of Aberdeen Asset Management. It was this panel that scored the team from West Ranch as the best.
“This is the pinnacle of my career,” Cox said. “It is the equivalent of winning the Super Bowl for me.”
