Readers of all ages are invited to get their paws on books during the dog days of summer as the Santa Clarita Public Library launches the 2014 “Paws to Read” Summer Reading program.

Participation is free and online registration begins Monday, June 9, 2014 at SCVSummerReading.com. The Summer Reading Program runs through July 26.

The “Paws to Read” program, sponsored in part by the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library, encourages residents to celebrate memorable animal characters throughout literature from friendly fur- balls and happy hippos to sappy serpents and quizzical quackers. Residents of all ages can explore an exciting assortment of animal-themed programming available at the Canyon Country, Valencia and Old Town Newhall Library branches, including cooking classes, group discussions, craft projects, movie screenings, storytelling sessions, and events featuring magicians and jugglers.

“The summer reading program is a great way for kids to keep learning while out of school and for residents of all ages to enhance their reading skills,” commented Laurene Weste. “This year’s theme is particularly special as readers can show their love for literature and animals by enjoying some of the best ‘friend’ stories of all time.”

Participants who set their reading goal and track the books read throughout the summer season are eligible to win prizes. Activities available to inspire reading this season include:

• Children’s summer reading programming – Storytelling, arts and crafts, and movie screenings, including: Charlotte’s Web, The Black Stallion, Homeward Bound, The Fox and the Hound, Balto, White Fang, Hoot, Winnie the Pooh and The Trumpet of the Swan.
• Programming for teens – A step by step “Mastering Manga Animals” drawing program, ceramic art decorating, and chef presentations.
• Adult programming – Several opportunities to discuss books with other readers, meet and greet with best-selling authors, crafting sessions and vegetarian themed cooking demonstrations with Culinary Wonders.

In addition to the library programming, readers are invited to enjoy new special events at off-site locations around the community, including the juggling wonders of David Cousin, animal balloon making with Buster Balloon, exotic animals from The Wildlife Company, and a performance from Wacko the Magician. St. Bonnies Sanctuary of Canyon Country will also be helping special four-legged friends find future homes at all three library branches from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

• Valencia Library branch on Saturday, June 21
• Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library branch on Saturday, June 28
• Old Town Newhall Library branch on Saturday, July 19
