The Master’s University women’s basketball team closed out its home schedule Saturday afternoon with a 62-50 win over Menlo College.
The win improved No. 21 TMU’s record to 20-6 overall and 10-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play while the Oaks’ record moved to 9-18 (2-12 GSAC).
Saturday’s win also marked the fifth-straight campaign that TMU has tallied at least 20 victories in a single season.
“This night was about our seniors,” commented TMU head coach Dan Waldeck. “They all have made such a huge impact on our program, and I can’t even quantify their legacy. I was so thrilled for Sydney [Emory] tonight. She’s battled through a lot of injuries in her career, and to see her go out there, play, and score one last time was arguably one of the most special moments of my coaching career. I’m so proud of our team and thankful that I get to be called their coach.”
Before Saturday’s game, the Lady Mustangs honored their six seniors (Ashley Bartow, Bianca Cubello, Megan Lindsley, Sydney Emory, Kelly Burns, and Aubrey Bekendam) in a special Senior Day ceremony.
After the Lady Mustangs tied the score at 2-2 early in the first quarter when Cubello scored on a jumper, Emory, who had been sidelined with an injury for her senior season, drained a three-pointer and gave TMU a 5-2 lead.
Emory’s three-pointer was exactly what the Lady Mustangs needed as TMU went on to lead the Oaks for the rest of the game.
As a team, TMU went 23-59 from the field (39%), 7-24 (29%) on three-pointers, and 9-17 (52%) on free throws.
Cubello led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed an evening-high nine rebounds while leading TMU in assist by dishing out two dimes. Notably, Cubello posted the Lady Mustangs’ largest lead of the evening (23 points) when she drove in a layup at the 4:24 mark in the third quarter, giving TMU 47-24 advantage.
Not to be overlooked, TMU newcomer Hannah Ostrom also scored in double figures by posting 10 points.
The Lady Mustangs will now prepare for its final game of the regular-season when it looks to take down No. 3 Vanguard University in Costa Mesa next Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
