Brendan Rodgers
Lancaster JetHawks shortstop Brendan Rodgers has been awarded the California League Player of the Month for May by Minor League Baseball.
Rodgers, 20, paced the High-A circuit in a myriad of offensive categories during the month. The Colorado Rockies’ top-ranked prospect led the league in batting (.409), hits (47), extra-base hits (21), total bases (86), home runs (eight), RBI (29), slugging (.748) and OPS (1.182). His 21 extra-base hits and 86 total bases topped all of the minors for the month.
The third overall pick of the Rockies in 2015, Rodgers helped lead the JetHawks into first place in the South Division with a California League-best 18-11 record for the month.
Rodgers posted two double-digit hit streaks in May. He hit safely in 13-straight games from May 2-15 and finished the month on a 10-game hit streak which began on May 21 and has continued into June (now 14 games). He recorded seven straight multi-hit games to end the month and totaled 14 multi-hit games overall.
The Florida native was twice named the California League’s Player of the Week in May. Rodgers’ first honor came for the week of May 8-14 and the second came for the week of May 22-28. He is the first JetHawk to win a monthly award since Houston Astros first baseman A.J. Reed won back-to-back player of the month awards in May and June, 2015.
Rodgers enters today’s action leading the California League in batting (.390), extra-base hits (27), slugging (.686) and OPS (1.096). He ranks second in total bases (109), third in doubles (16), third in OBP (.417) and tied for fifth in RBI (37). He missed the first 17 games of the season on the disabled list.
