Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, the largest girl-serving nonprofit agency in Los Angeles, will honor 274 young women at the annual GSGLA Gold Award Ceremony on Saturday, June 6, at 1:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
These young women, from communities in Los Angeles County and parts of Kern, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, have earned the prestigious national Girl Scout Gold Award – the highest honor in Girl Scouting for girls who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership to make positive changes in local and global communities.
Among them are 13 girls from the Santa Clarita Valley. They are: Lauren Borchart, Madalyn M. Cromidas, Rachel Darling, Krista Fredrickson, Lindsey Gollom, Samantha Gruman, Delena Humble, Monique Elizabeth McAnnally, Sophie Mendell, Summer Mendell, Bridget Leigh Murphy, Taylor Nelson and Natalie Lynn Slater.
Nationwide, only six percent of all eligible Girl Scouts achieve the Gold Award. Out of 112 Girl Scout councils, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles has the highest number of girls reaching Gold.
Earning the Gold Award is a multi-year process in which a girl plans and implements a challenging, large-scale project that is innovative, engages others, and has a lasting impact on the community.
This year’s Gold Award class provided more than 23,000 hours of service, leadership, and advocacy. Awardees have spotlighted critical issues such as literacy, waste management and recycling, childhood obesity, disease prevention, and community revitalization, to name a few. The projects reached communities as close as Los Angeles and as far as India and China.
