[Supv. Antonovich] – In light of recurring complaints by local businesses in the San Gabriel Valley, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich is asking the Public Utilities Commission to regulate the manner in which utility companies like Southern California Edison impact the day-to-day operations of businesses.
Southern California Edison provides electricity to more than 5,000 large and 280,000 small businesses. Edison routinely performs “Planned Outages” that are wholly within their control without providing adequate notification to business owners so that they can prepare. These outages are performed during normal business hours without any regard for financial impacts. There is no reason this work cannot be done at night or on weekends.
Last week, a beverage distributor in the city of Industry was left scrambling for emergency generators last-minute, after receiving notice that his power was being cut. The business owner spent over $20,000 on emergency generators only to find out that the project had been scrapped.
“It is pathetic that Edison didn’t even bother to tell this business owner that the project had been scrapped,” said Antonovich. “He found out only when he approached an Edison employee nearby and asked about the status of the project.”

If electricity is mission critical the business needs backup power. Period.
