Santa Clarita has been fortunate to get some much needed rainfall in recent weeks. The winter rains provide a great opportunity to take a closer look at the storm drain system and the important role each resident plays in keeping it clean.
Storm drains are designed to move rainwater from the streets to prevent flooding. However, rain and irrigation overflow can also transport unsafe chemicals and bacteria from our homes and streets, directly into the Santa Clara River.
We must all do our part to keep pollution out of our water supply. Even though the Santa Clara River isn’t always flowing on the surface, it is a primary contributor to our local drinking water supply.
What’s the City Doing?
To comply with the Federal Clean Water Act, the City of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County have been working together on an Enhanced Watershed Management Plan to capture and improve water that flows from our storm drains to the Santa Clara River. The final plan will outline:
- Constructing treatment facilities and infiltration areas to capture, store and recharge water
- Low impact development
- Educational programs
- Public outreach and other special municipal activities
All projects will be evaluated for additional benefits, such as improving flood control and increasing our local water supply.
