A tough stretch of baseball continued for The Master’s University Tuesday afternoon when Corban of Oregon edged the Mustangs 5-4 at Herwaldt Stadium.
Losing their fifth straight game, the 11th-ranked Mustangs fell three games under .500 at 5-8. During the winless streak the club has dropped three one-run decisions and two more two-run games.
Defeat was the farthest thing from the Mustangs’ minds when they scored four runs in the last of the first inning. Spotting the Warriors an unearned run in the top of the frame, the Mustangs found that turnabout was fair play as they took advantage of a Corban error to tally four unearned runs en route to a 4-1 lead.
Max Maitland scored the first run on a wild pitch, David Sheaffer doubled in Jason Karkenny and Aaron Shackelford to put the Mustangs in front, and Matt Janes capped the uprising with an rbi single that plated Sheaffer.
Mustang starter Aiden Stout made that three-run lead stand up over the next two innings until the Warriors parlayed two singles and a fielder’s choice into a run in the fourth frame that halved the Mustang advantage.
Then, in the sixth that two-run margin disappeared as the Warriors capitalized on reliever Nick Brooks’ (0-1) wildness (two walks and two hit batsmen) to score three times on just one hit.
The Mustangs had a chance to pull even in the bottom of the frame when Pearson Good reached on an error and Ryan Bricker walked. However, a Maitland flyout ended the threat.
That was really the last chance the Mustangs had as Warrior reliever Dom Baker was perfect over the final three frames on the way to a scoreless five innings of relief that netted him his first win of he season.
The club’s leading hitter, Aaron Shackelford, paced the Mustangs’ seven-hit attack with a 2-4 outing.
Seeking to put a stop to their losing skid, the Mustangs will welcome No. 20 Vanguard to Placerita Canyon this weekend for an important three-game series. The Lions and Mustangs will play a single game on Friday and then tangle in a twinbill on Saturday.
