The Master’s University women’s basketball team closed its 2016-17 regular season schedule with a 67-47 loss to Vanguard University, the third-ranked team in the NAIA.
Saturday’s loss snapped an eight-game winning streak and moved No. 21 TMU’s record to 20-7 overall and 10-6 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. Vanguard, the regular-season conference champion, improved to 26-2 (15-1 GSAC).
Despite posting a one-point lead at the 7:13 mark in the second quarter when Hannah Ostrom drained a three-pointer and put the Lady Mustangs up 15-14, TMU trailed the Lions for the majority of the evening en route to its 67-47 loss.
Ostrom led TMU in scoring with 12 points while Bianca Cubello and Aubrey Bekendam both grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
As a team, TMU went 13-38 (34%) from the field, 6-18 (33%) from behind the arc and 14-22 (63%) from the charity stripe.
“We knew this would be tough game, but I thought we played extremely lethargic,” commented TMU head coach Dan Waldeck. “Credit to vanguard as they were more ready and engaged for 40 minutes and beat us in every facet of the game. We have a week to make some much needed improvements as we prepare for the conference tournament.”
Next weekend, the Lady Mustangs will compete in the 2017 GSAC Tournament. TMU enters the tournament with the No. 4 seed and will take on the No. 5 seed Arizona Christian University Firestorm in the quarterfinal round at 7:30 p.m. on Bross Court.
