A theme emerged Tuesday as the Golden State Athletic Conference announced its annual All-GSAC squad. Of TMU’s four selections, three were seniors and the other was a junior defender who often performs like a senior.
Kellian Ahearn, Hailey Gomillion and Lynnae George, all seniors, and junior Kayla Peterson were among the 25 players picked as the GSAC’s best of 2018.
“They’re an important part of what we do,” said TMU coach Curtis Lewis. “It’s nice for other coaches to affirm the quality of our players.”
GSAC coaches have regularly affirmed George, who made her fourth appearance on the All-GSAC team. This year, she’s scored four goals and assisted on three others, the highlight coming on Sept. 8 against then-No. 25 Jamestown when she scored a golden goal two minutes into overtime.
Hailey Gomillion, who appeared on the All-GSAC team for the second straight year, has been equally clutch. Three times early in the season, she scored in the 80th minute or later to tie the score or give TMU the lead. She has scored five goals with five assists and has teamed with George to lead the team as co-captains.
Ahearn, a midfielder, is among the Mustangs’ leaders in goals and assists. Her five goals and four assists are both career highs, and she consistently brings a physical presence to TMU’s midfield.
Peterson, a three-time All-GSAC pick, has anchored TMU’s defense at center back. The Mustangs have completed 10 shutouts on the season, 13th most in the country.
“It seems like she’s a senior,” Lewis said. “She plays like a senior.”
Lewis was quick to qualify that his quartet of All-GSAC picks wasn’t completely responsible for TMU’s success.
The Mustangs finished third in the regular season and will host a first-round GSAC tournament game on Saturday, and many Mustangs have had a hand in it.
“We want to be careful that those individual awards don’t take over our team perspective,” Lewis said. “It’s definitely taken a full team to get to where we are. But these players are important and we’re excited to have them on our team.”
