Household hazardous waste often contains chemicals that can be harmful, both to the environment and people. The best way to avoid these chemicals is to purchase non-toxic products for cleaning, pest control and weed removal.
However, if you do have leftover HHW items at your home, and want to dispose of them properly, the city of Santa Clarita has numerous options for safe and free disposal:
Mobile Household Hazardous Waste Events – The next one is Saturday, April 2, at College of the Canyons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Used oil and filters collection centers – Used motor oil and filters can go to any of the local 30+ collection centers located within the city of Santa Clarita. Most auto supply stores are part of this program.
PaintCare locations – Leftover or old paint can be recycled at any of the three local paint retailers that participate in the PaintCare program.
Household battery drop-off locations – Alkaline and other household batteries can be recycled at your local library, community center and City Hall. Just drop them off during normal business hours.
Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb (CFL) drop-off locations – Unbroken CFLs can be taken to participating home improvement stores. Call the store first to verify participation.
Sharps and lancets disposal – Sharps, lancets, and medications can be dropped off at the front of the Sheriff’s station in the safe drop storage containers. Waste Management also has a mail program for customers with sharps disposal needs.
Other Miscellaneous HHW items – If you have other chemicals such as acids, bases, insecticides, herbicides, cleaners, or gasoline, permanent S.A.F.E. Collection Centers in Northridge and Sun Valley are available to take multiple types of hazardous materials. They are open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Check GreenSantaClarita.com for locations and information on proper HHW disposal.
Remember: Do not put Household Hazardous Waste in the trash or recycling containers, and do not pour down the drain or in the street.
Properly dispose of all materials in a safe and legal manner and help Santa Clarita stay clean.

It has taken decades of public awareness programmes and educational literature to make people start to take responsibility for the environmental disasters that have been caused by lack of waste
management and recycling. This causes the air to become polluted by toxic
gases. According to him, the practice of scrap metal recycling in Los Angeles will not only help us keep the environment clean but also make some additional
money.
