The COC women’s soccer team played its final regular season home game of the 2014 season on Monday, with the squad of 11 sophomores taking the home field for perhaps the final time.
Following a pre-game introduction and flower presentation, the Cougars huddled near the home sideline as the team took a moment to reflect on the task at hand, the season behind them, and the possibility of postseason that lay ahead.
Then head coach Justin Lundin’s team went out and did what it has done all season, combining a stifling defensive presence with an overwhelming offensive assault to edge visiting West L.A. at Cougar Stadium.
Midfielder
Yesenia Avilez opened the scoring in the 12th minute, and Canyons never looked back leading 2-0 at halftime, and 4-0 at the end of regulation to improve to 14-2-3 and 11-1-1 in conference play.
The Cougars currently sit in first place in the Western State Conference (WSC) South standings, one point ahead of Santa Monica College.
Canyons could clinch its fourth straight conference championship with a win against Citrus College in the final regular season game of the year. That game is set to start at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.
