College of the Canyons women’s basketball players Alexis Orellana and Shauna Van Grinsven have been named to the 2018-19 California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Academic All-State Team.
Orellana and Van Grinsven are part of group of 85 players representing 40 colleges from across the state, forming the largest group of academic all-state honorees to date.
COC is one of 24 programs to have multiple players honored.
To qualify for Academic All-State recognition student-athletes must complete at least a year of play on their teams, earn at least 24 units and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Orellana posted a GPA of 3.8 and Van Grinsven checked in with a 3.75 GPA.
On the court, Orellana led the team in scoring with 18.4 points while also averaging five assists and 4.8 rebounds a game. Van Grinsven averaged a stat line of 5.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.75 blocks each night out.
The 2018-19 Academic All-State Team will be recognized at the CCCWBCA Banquet of Champions on March 14 at the Courtyard by Marriot in Oxnard. This celebration will serve as a prelude to the CCCAA Women’s Basketball State Tournament quarterfinals, which take place the following day at Ventura College.
