College of the Canyons golfers took the first two spots in the individual standings but carded a five-man score of 400 at Bakersfield Country Club on Monday to finish second in its first Western State Conference tourney of the season.
COC freshman Nobuhiko Wakaari finished his round with a score of 74 to win tournament medalist honors. That mark bested the round of 75 turned in by COC sophomore Tom Sims who was second overall.
Anguerrand Voisin was third for the Cougars after shooting a 77, to finish tied for fifth overall in the tournament field.
Matthew Mansholt (86) and Tom Sims (88) rounded out the top-five for Canyons. Justin Buenaventura also competed but had his score dropped from the final tally.
Santa Barbara City College won the event with a score of 386. Canyons (400) slotted into the number two spot followed by third-place Ventura College (403).
Canyons, which won the Southern California regional title before finishing as runner up at the state championships a season ago, is gunning for its 10th straight conference title in 2019.
COC returns to action Monday, Feb. 18, at WSC event No. 2 hosted by SBCC at Alisal Ranch in Solvang. Tee time is 10 a.m.
