College of the Canyons picked up a 6-2 victory over visiting Allan Hancock College on Thursday, good for the Cougars’ first win of the 2019 campaign.
Canyons (1-4) sent right-hander Chase Farrell to the mound vs. the Bulldogs and the freshman immediately responded by striking out the side to begin the game. Farrell (1-0) lasted five innings to get the win, allowing two runs, striking out three and walking four along the way.
Allan Hancock (3-2) got a pair of runs home in the third on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice that put the game at 2-0.
In the home half of the inning COC Luke Chung singled home Tyler Grodell. Chung later came around to score after an error by the Bulldog infield to tie the game at 2-2.
In the next frame Andy Vierra pushed a sac-fly to right field allowing Nick Henry to score and give COC a 3-2 lead.
Henry and Vierra also factored into the seventh inning action with both driving in runs to help make it a 6-2 final score.
Vierra finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Henry was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Grodell also had three hits in the game.
COC relievers Brandon Henry and Nate Duarte combined to pitch four shutout innings to preserve the victory.
Allan Hancock recorded just three hits in the game. Starter Isaac Baez took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, in four innings of work.
