College of the Canyons’ softball team posted a 6-2 conference victory over visiting Citrus College on Tuesday behind six strong innings from starter Katie Taix and a three-RBI day from Danielle Chatman.
Chatman put Canyons (8-8, 2-0) on the board in the home half of the first with an RBI-double that tied the game at 1-1.
COC then turned the game in its favor with a four-run second inning highlighted by an RBI-double from Valerie Rivas and a run-scoring single by Chatman.
The Cougars plated another run in the inning when Rivas came around to score on an infield error by the Owls that put Canyons in control at 5-1.
In the third, Rivas brought home Jordan Vallejo with an RBI sac-fly that made it a 6-1 COC lead.
Taix (5-3) helped turn that early run support into the Cougars third win in the last four games. The sophomore was charged with two earned runs during her six innings in the circle, striking out three and walking two along the way.
Joy Veloz was called on to pitch the seventh before Canyons could officially claim the victory.
Chatman finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a walk and a stolen base.
Heidi Ludy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Rena Edwards was 2-for-2 with a run.
Canyons will remain at Whitten Field as part of a seven-game homestand that runs through March 10. Up next is a conference matchup with L.A. Valley College at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1.
