Stevenson Ranch: Zone 3, Public Safety Report for the week of October 31, 2016 – November 5, 2016

The following crimes were reported last week in Stevenson Ranch (Zone 3):

10/31/16
Burglary (Vehicle) – 25300 The Old Road
Person(s) unknown smashed the passenger window of the victim’s vehicle and stole his computer tablet, cell phone, prescription medications, and wrist watch. Total loss was $1,050.00.

11/02/16
Burglary (Vehicle) – 27400 The Old Road
Person(s) unknown smashed the passenger side window of the victim’s vehicle and stole a backpack containing a Smith and Wesson .38 revolver, two pairs of ‘Beats by Dre Sports’ headphones, and a gym belt. Total loss was $900.00.

11/04/16
Petty Theft (Shoplifting) – 25800 The Old Road
A female juvenile left the store with several items she did not pay for. She was detained for petty theft shoplifting and released to her mother.

11/05/16
Burglary (Shoplifting) – 25400 The Old Road
A male adult left the location with an item he did not pay for. The subject admitted to Deputies prior to his arrest that he was in possession of Marijuana. The suspect was arrested for Burglary. Shoplifting and Possession of Marijuana.

Tip of the Week: Securing a Handgun in an Unattended Vehicle
On September 26, 2016, the Governor signed Senate Bill 869 into law. This law, which goes into effect January 1, 2017, requires any person leaving a handgun in an unattended vehicle to properly secure it per section 25140 of the Penal Code. In order for the handgun to be properly secured per this law, the person must do one of the following:

1.Lock the handgun in the trunk of the vehicle.
2.Lock the handgun in a locked container and place the container out of plain view.
3.Lock the handgun in a locked container that is permanently affixed to the vehicle’s interior and not in plain view.

For purposes of this law, a vehicle is considered unattended “when a person who is lawfully carrying or transporting a handgun in a vehicle is not within close proximity to the vehicle to reasonable prevent unauthorized access to the vehicle and its contents.”
The term “locked container” is defined in section 16850 of the Penal Code and states;
“a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, keylock, combination lock, or similar locking device. The term “locked container” does not include the utility (center console) or glove compartment of a motor vehicle.”
