Members of the Drug Free Youth In Town (DFYiT) program held a “Lifelines” assembly for sixth grade students from Santa Clarita elementary schools Wednesday, and a second assembly is scheduled for Thursday.
The assemblies are broken up into three lessons on smoking, alcohol and marijuana, and are taught by the sixth graders’ slightly older peers from Valencia High School and West Ranch High School who are involved in their school’s DFYIT program.
Included in the lessons are what effects drugs have on the body, resistance skills to say no to friends who suggest smoking, alcohol, or marijuana, the potential for addiction and other aspects of drug abuse.
The assemblies, which take place at Santa Clarita junior high schools, are a collaborative effort between Hart School District and the Newhall, Saugus and Sulphur Springs School Districts, with support from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department and the city of Santa Clarita, district officials said.
Hart School District has also created curriculum to expand the Lifelines assemblies into classrooms of sixth grade students and schools throughout Santa Clarita, district officials said.
Hart School District provides drug education and prevention programs to current and future students to empower them to choose a drug-free lifestyle, according to the news release.
The first assembly took place Wednesday afternoon at Sulphur Springs Elementary School and the next assembly is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at Rio Norte Junior High School.
