The California Highway Patrol’s Newhall office reported a fatal crash on northbound Highway 14 between the Sierra Highway and Sand Canyon exits in Canyon Country late Wednesday morning.
A man was killed when his vehicle rear-ended a Caltrans sweeper crew truck about half a mile south of Sand Canyon. A SigAlert has been called for the area.
All northbound lanes except No. 4 were blocked as of 12:45 p.m.
“The call came in at 11:18 this morning,” said Officer Josh Greengard of the CHP Newhall Office at 12:30 p.m. “A Caltrans (sweeper) was (northbound) in the center divider and carpool lanes doing a sweeper detail, doing routine maintenance and cleaning of the center divider.
“A CHP unit was running a traffic break, and for reasons unknown right now, the driver of a black Jeep SUV rear-ended a Caltrans worker truck, a GMC 3500 pickup” with a dump truck bed, Greengard said.
“The driver of the Jeep was pronounced deceased on scene,” he said.
A Caltrans worker in the GMC pickup also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner has been called to the scene as CHP officials investigate the crash, he said.
The victim, a resident of Agua Dulce, has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, he said.
“Right now we’re just trying to pick up the pieces,” Greengard said. “The carpool and No. 1 lanes will be closed for an unknown duration.”
