1870 - Armantha Thibaudeau, community leader during early 20th Century and co-founder of chamber of commerce, born in Kentucky [story]
Armantha Thibaudeau

Golden Valley senior Kristian Martinez led SCV boys and Chelsey Totten led SCV girls in the season’s second weekend of cross-country action Saturday at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa.

Golden Valley looked even better than last week in Saturday’s Woodbridge Invitational as the Grizzlies threw down the hammer, putting six under 15 minutes, 30 seconds, slotting them fifth overall.

Although not as deep, Hart also had a stellar showing, as all five of their scorers were nearly under 15:30, as well. The Indians took ninth overall. Saugus’ lone runner at the Woodbridge Invite was Daniel Tuit, who performed well, while Canyon and Valencia did not compete this weekend.

On the girls side, Golden Valley, West Ranch and Hart all performed incredibly well. After a strong showing, Hart could be in the mix for the third and final spot to the CIF postseason by November.

Although West Ranch’s Taylor Welker and Weslie Totten of Golden Valley did not compete, if you scored the teams against each other by invitational scoring (list of top performers below), the three teams scores would of been very close, as in just six points close:

West Ranch: 2-3-10-11-12 = 38

Golden Valley: 1-4-7-14-15 = 41

Hart: 5-6-8-9-16 = 44

The times were close at the Woodbridge Invitational too, which means Foothill League Meet No. 1 at Central Park this Thursday should be a great one.

Individually, the biggest move was Golden Valley’s Juan David Garcia, moving from third to second, ahead of Hart’s Sam Peckham. Garcia was just one second behind teammate Kristian Martinez, running a sensational 14:39, while Peckham performed well, crossing in 14:48. Hart’s Austin O’Neil and Gerardo Granados and Carlos Lopez of Golden Valley also had great performances, all three moving up in the rankings.

On the girls side, the lone move was West Ranch senior Ashley Welker, who moved back into the rankings after an 18:06 clocking Saturday. Teammate Samantha Phillips (18:11) ran well and Saugus’ Jessica McCall made her season debut with a huge personal best of 18:15 as well. Freshman phenom Augustina Hansen of Hart also ran fantastically, crossing in 18:22 at Woodbridge.
