It might be chilly outside these days, but the SCV Senior Center will be heating up with the sounds of Jimmy McConnell’s 18-piece big band on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m.
For more than 20 years, McConnell’s band has been playing Big Band and jazz music by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Buddy Rich and more.
Born in Louisiana, McConnell has performed and recorded with artists including B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Isaac Hayes, Martha and the Vandellas and others. His band performs on Sunday nights at Paladino’s in Encino.
The Santa Clarita Swing Jazz Club hosts a different band the fourth Sunday of every month. The cost is $7 for jazz club members and $10 for non-members. The January swing dance is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a free dance lesson at 1:30 p.m. The dance also acts as a fundraiser for the Senior Center, with proceeds from ticket sales going directly to the center.
“It’s a thrill to have the legendary Jimmy McConnell and his band perform at the Senior Center,” said Robin Clough, the center’s director of recreation and volunteers. “There’s no need to leave Santa Clarita for authentic and extraordinary Big Band music and swing dancing. This fun event is for music lovers and dancers of all ages.”
The Senior Center is located at 22900 Market Street in Newhall.
