The College of the Canyons Art Gallery will begin its 2013 exhibition schedule by featuring the work of internationally known kinetic sculptor Jim Jenkins in the exhibition “Wizard of Kinetic Sculpture.”

Described as part sculptor, part engineer and part choreographer, Jenkins’ work is always beautifully crafted and often humorous in nature.

Although he uses materials common to any sculptor, Jenkins’ works often feature an enhanced element of movement and motion, with the positioning and operation of many of his pieces tying in closely with elements of dance.

Inspired by a childhood fascination with both art and science, Jenkins eventually found his creative outlet by combining his passions for technology with sculpture.

He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University, and currently serves as director of the sculpture program at California State University, Fullerton.

In 1997, Jenkins received a commission as part of the City of Los Angeles’ Percent for the Arts Program. The resultant work, entitled “Alaris” stands outside of the Southwest Aviation Complex at the Van Nuys Airport.

Jim has also curated several exhibitions featuring kinetic art for venues such as The Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles and the City of Brea Art Gallery.

“Well crafted, provocative, humorous, thoughtful and brilliant are just a few words to describe Jim’s work,” said Larry Hurst, director of the COC art gallery.

“His pieces often include a specifically choreographed cycle, or program, which guides the viewer through a performance of sorts,” added Hurst. “As such, all the sculptures in this exhibition are kinetic, which should provide visitors with a very lively gallery experience.”

One such example of this kinetic art form is the Jenkins sculpture “Jacaranda” which will be prominently featured as part of this exhibition.

Inspired by observing the social and territorial aspects of birds outside of his studio windows, as part of “Jacaranda” Jenkins has programmed a computer microprocessor to move the birds in sequence — both together and alone — as a way to reenact the birds’ erratic movements, and set forth a sense of motion.

The exhibition “Wizard of Kinetic Sculpture” will be on display at the COC Art Gallery from Tuesday, Jan. 29 through Thursday, March 7.

A special conversation with the artist will take place in the Art Gallery from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14.

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.
