Jul 26, 2017: Spring Print Competition – Art Exhibit Reception at Santa Clarita City Hall

Join us for reception celebrating the winners of the Santa Clarita Valley Photographers Association Spring Print Competition.

The SCVPA Spring Print Competition takes place on May 13 at the Sierra Hills Clubhouse. The annual competition features members’ artwork in a variety of categories.

The winners of each category and those receiving a merit are featured in the exhibition in the First Floor Gallery.

The Santa Clarita Valley Photographers Association is dedicated to advancing the art and business of photography.

Jul 27, 2017: ARTree Speaker Series – John Moffitt at The MAIN

A student of art from an early age, Southern California native John Moffitt took up painting after leaving college in 1969. By the early seventies his exhibited oil paintings were winning awards in both traditional and modern categories and his tromp l’oeil or surrealistic styled works were added to area collections. Over the decades, Moffitt has honed his crafts as a fine artist, muralist, illustrator and scenic artist, always exhibiting a masterful handling of draftsmanship and the tools of the trade.

His interest in large scale painting led him to the motion picture industry in 1975 where he worked as a motion picture Scenic Artist creating hundreds of monumental landscapes and cityscape backdrops as well as murals, fine art and portraiture for films and television. From Goonies to Ghost Busters, the Lethal Weapon series, the Batman series and the Ironman series to Benjamin Button, Moffitt’s artwork has graced the screen, his work often “hidden in plain sight.”

Come hear John Moffitt speak about his life and work at the ARTree Speaker Series, Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at The MAIN in downtown Newhall.

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Mary Alice Monroe will be discussing her new book, “Beach House for Rent,” at the Barnes & Noble in Valencia on July 27.

Monroe has authored more than 20 books. She is passionate about conservation and the environment and writes richly textured books that delve into the complexities of interpersonal relationships and the parallels between the land and life.

“Beach House for Rent” went on sale June 20. Books will be available for purchase and signing to follow. Refreshments will be served at the event.

With roots in acoustic folk as well as vintage 1930’s cowboy music, her songs are about what she knows – the southern CA farmlands and the ranches that surround it. Come prepared to be delighted by her beautiful voice, compelling stories set to music, and her warm and entertaining stage presence.
