The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced Monday that LA County Library is among the 29 finalists for the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, one of 14 libraries selected nationwide.
The National Medal for Museum and Library Service is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries by IMLS. For 24 years, the award has celebrated institutions that demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service, and are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities.
“The 29 National Medal finalists showcase the tremendous ability of libraries and museums to serve as vital community resources,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “The Institute of Museum and Library Services is honored to recognize these leading institutions. We congratulate them on the work they are doing across the United States.”
This year’s finalists include public libraries and library systems; a statewide digital library; art, science, and children’s museums; and many other types of institutions that exemplify the great diversity of libraries and museums across the country. “We are thrilled to be one of this year’s finalist for the IMLS National Medal, the most prestigious recognition in our field, and we would love to bring this medal home to the people of Los Angeles County,” said LA County Library Director Skye Patrick.
“LA County Library strives to improve lives through our many programs that focus on the whole person. Libraries are no longer just about books; libraries are becoming more people-focused. This recognition proves that LA County Library isn’t alone in this quest; many of the nation’s libraries are moving in the same direction,” said Patrick.
National Medal winners will be announced this spring. Representatives from winning institutions will be honored for their extraordinary contributions at a ceremony on May 24 in Washington, D.C.
As part of the National Medal’s celebration of institutions, IMLS will feature the finalists on their Facebook or Twitter pages over the next 29 days. Starting today, IMLS is encouraging community members who have visited LA County Library to share their story on social media.
