VENTURA — College of the Canyons’ doubles team of Una Stanisavljevic and Seleste Sakato finished runner-up at the Western State Conference Doubles Championships after a tough loss in Friday’s championship match.
The duo entered the conference tourney as the No. 4 ranked team and picked up victories over an unranked team from Santa Monica College and the No. 11 ranked team from Santa Barbara City College to advance to Friday’s semi-final round.
From there, Stanisavljevic/Sakato took the court vs. the No. 14 duo of Jacqlyn Zavala and Alexis Strange from Bakersfield College and quickly earned the win 6-0, 6-1.
That victory set up a meeting later in the day with the No. 2 ranked team of Kayleen Sanchez & Paige Darstein, also from Bakersfield, in a showdown for the WSC Doubles Championship.
Unfortunately, Stanisavljevic/Sakato were bested 6-2, 6-0 as Sanchez/Darstein claimed the doubles title for Bakersfield. Sanchez was also the WSC Singles Champion for the Renegades.
Stanisavljevic/Sakato will now move on to compete in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Championships beginning April 25 in Ojai. The four-day event is also the site of the CCCAA State Championships, where a team, singles and doubles champion will all be crowned.
COC will also be represented by the doubles pair of Marisa Wambolt and Nicole Villarta at the regional championships in Ojai. Canyons will see two players compete in singles action at the regional championships with Stanisavljevic and Villarta both qualifying on that side.
