For the second time in the last three games, Ella Brubaker scored over 30 points as The Master’s women’s basketball team came from behind to beat the La Sierra Golden Eagles 75-71 Monday in Riverside.
The Lady Mustangs (6-0) trailed 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 30-29 at the half, but shot 18-of-36 (50%) in the second half and out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 45-25 in the game to get the win.
“We found a way to win on the road against a team playing with a lot of confidence and relentless energy,” said Head Coach Lisa Zamroz. “We didn’t deserve that one, but got it done.”
With 5:29 to play in the third quarter and La Sierra leading 42-40, The Master’s went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take control 50-42. The Golden Eagles climbed to within three in the final frame, but the Lady Mustangs hit their free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
Of the 45 rebounds brought down by the Lady Mustangs, 20 were offensive that led to 17 second-chance points. The team also scored 42 points in the paint, compared to 26 for La Sierra, but could only muster 4-of-26 from 3-point range.
“Between our 3-point shooting slump and committing 23 fouls, we are lucky to have escaped that one with a win,” Zamroz said. “Our dominance on the offensive glass gave us enough second chance opportunities to seal it.”
Brubaker, the leading scorer in the GSAC, finished with 33 points against the Golden Eagles, added five rebounds and led the team with five assists. Lexi Hernandez finished with 12 points and Belle Hernandez 10. Both Lexi and Jalya Julmist pulled down a team-high seven rebounds each.
“Ella really carried the load for us offensively,” Zamroz said. “She came out in the second quarter with the offensive presence we lacked in the first and didn’t look back.
“Lexi did a great job for us in the second half working the hgh post,” she continued. “She had some timely passes and takes to the rim that started our run in the fourth quarter.”
The Master’s returns home next Monday as they host the Lincoln Oaklanders in another non-conference game. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
