ameriturf2Homeowners who love the idea of getting government rebates to replace their turf — but don’t love the idea of completely giving up their lawns — have a local option that qualifies for the rebates without losing the lush look and feel of real grass: Synthetic turf from Santa Clarita Valley-based AmeriTurf Systems.

“A lot of homeowners would love to redesign their landscapes to save water, but there’s something about the look and feel of grass,” says Tim Hollinger, President of AmeriTurf Systems (ameriturfsystems.com). “Our newest synthetic blends are closer than ever to the real thing, in appearance and feel. And, our permeable synthetic turf qualifies for most government incentive programs.”

As an example, Hollinger cited the new turf replacement incentive program offered by the Castaic Lake Water Agency, which has received coverage in the local media. Under the program, funded by the state of California, homeowners can get a $2-per-square-foot reimbursement for projects in which turf is replaced with landscaping that consumes less water.

“In the CLWA’s program, a percentage of the new landscaping needs to be plant material, with an emphasis of course on native and drought-tolerant vegetation,” Hollinger says. “But permeable non-plant surfaces, including mulch and synthetic turf, can also be part of the mix. That enables homeowners to keep a lawn in their landscape, while saving water and offsetting a significant portion of the expense.”

CLWA has posted the details of its program on a special website that explains the rules and guides homeowners through the incentive program’s process: lawnreplacement.clwa.org.

Similar incentives are available elsewhere in Southern California, too. For example, Metropolitan Water District customers can also earn $2-per-square-foot incentives similar to that offered by CLWA. Details are available at socalwatersmart.com.

In addition to residential lawn grass, synthetic options are also available for sports playing surfaces, from soccer to football to golf — and from the tee to the green.

Hollinger says AmeriTurf’s modern synthetic turf products “are not your father’s Astroturf.”

“Our Bermudas and Fescues are the spitting image of the real thing. They look like it, and they feel like it, too,” Hollinger says. “They’re durable, kid-friendly and pet-friendly. You’ll still use a little water here and there to hose down the turf, but the water savings are phenomenal. And you don’t have to mow.”

Additional information is available at ameriturfsystems.com or by contacting Tim Hollinger at tim@ameriturfsystems.com.

  1. I loathe this stuff. Looks “real” only under certain light, at a certain time of year. The rest of the time it looks like a cheap miniature golf green. And I guarantee that cute little girl in the picture is forcing that smile, my kid hates the feel of the synthetic stuff.

I’ve always wondered how it feels barefooted on a hot SCV day…

Are we just going to ignore how terrible turf is in 90+ degree weather?

  5. Fake turf is HOT underfoot. Also smells like rubber.

  6. I have a small patch in my backyard and HATE IT! I have pets. Everything the company told us was a lie. It STINKS!!! I use more water hosing it down to get rid of the smell then when we had real grass. Worst investment ever!

  8. I’d rather have a rock garden with succulents. Fake turf shines like plastic and is not natural at all.

  10. Bottom line: it isn’t grass. It’s the anti-grass.

    Gardens instead of grass.

  12. The rebates are BS. You have to have a perfect lawn and then want to get rid of your perfect lawn and replace it with fake grass AND plants that need water. Not sure why I’d want to loose grass area for he kids and dogs to play to put in plants that still require water. The majority of people that would consider this have no or messed up lawn but then you don’t qualify. I want either nice lawn that I have to water or nice fake lawn that I don’t have to water. Not random plants that need water and fake lawn that doesn’t need water.
