NORTHRIDGE – For the fifth consecutive season and for the seventh time in the past 10 campaigns, CSUN will host The Master’s University in a women’s basketball exhibition Wednesday night. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m. Live stats of the game will be available on GoMatadors.com.
The Mustangs are ranked No. 14 in the 2018-19 NAIA Division 1 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was released last week. TMU finished 19-11 in 2017-18 and advanced to the NAIA national tournament for the sixth straight time.
The Master’s added freshman Stephanie Soares to a veteran squad. Soares, a 6-6 post player, Competed for Brazil’s senior national team in a pre-Olympic qualifier this past Summer in Colombia. She was rated as a five-star recruit by ESPN. Hannah Forrar is the team’s returning leading scorer as she averaged 12.9 points per game a year ago.
CSUN’s Channon Fluker was selected as 1-of-20 watch list candidates for the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award Oct. 25. Named after the three-time All-American and 1994 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top centers in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.
Fluker and Serafina Maulupe have been chosen preseason All-Conference in both the coaches and media polls. Fluker has been named Big West Conference Player of the Year for the past two seasons. The 6-4 center enters her senior season 1,607 points and a school record 1,072 rebounds, giving her chance to become the 373rd Division I women’s basketball player to join the 2000/1000 club.
Maulupe was injured in her fifth year of competition during practice a year ago and as a result, she missed the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign. She was awarded a sixth-year of eligibility and is currently working towards a master’s degree. Maulupe will have a chance to score 1,000 points in a CSUN uniform as she will enter 2018-19 with 859 points with the Matadors.
CSUN, the defending Big West Tournament champion, is picked first in the Big West Conference coaches preseason women’s basketball poll and second in the Big West Conference preseason media women’s basketball poll released Oct. 24.
The Matadors (19-16, 8-8 in 2017-18) received six first place votes in the coaches’ poll for a total of 77 points. UC Davis was awarded the remaining three first place votes for 75 points to come in second. UC Irvine (56) is third followed by Long Beach State (54) and Hawai’i (45). Cal Poly (35), UC Santa Barbara (24), UC Riverside (23), and Cal State Fullerton (16) round out the poll.
In the media poll, UC Davis is first with 12 first place votes and 171 points. CSUN was given the remaining eight first place votes for a 166-point total for second place. UC Irvine and Long Beach State are tied for third with 108 points. Cal Poly is fourth with 101. Hawai’i (88), UC Santa Barbara (66), UC Riverside (55), and Cal State Fullerton (41) round out the poll.
