It was a Senior Day wish come true as The Master’s University honored eight men playing their final regular season match at home with a 3-2 win over the visiting OUAZ Spirit Saturday on Reese Field.
Prince Chingancheke, one of the eight seniors honored at halftime, collected all three goals for TMU. It was the first hat trick of his career.
The win moves the Mustangs (7-4-3, 3-2-1 GSAC) into fourth place in the GSAC standings with 10 points. If they get a win next week in their final game of the regular season, they can secure a home match in the opening round of the GSAC Championship Tournament that starts on Nov. 4.
“Relieved to get the win and score some goals,” said TMU Head Coach Jim Rickard. “Relieved because only good things come from that win. We put ourselves in the playoffs and I’m super excited for Prince and to get him going because he obviously has the skill for it. He definitely put us on his back today offensively.”
After Tom Cohen put the Spirit on the board just 6:09 into the first half, Chingancheke got the answer 36 minutes later off an assist from Giorgio Martino. It took both teams to the locker room at the half tied at 1-1.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Chingancheke picked up his second goal off an assist from Caden Deck. And then in the 75th minute, the hat trick was put in the books, this time with assists from both Giorgio Martino and Matt Picht, for what proved to be the game-winner.
“That was the difference in the game, especially going up 3-1,” Coach Rickard said. “And we had our chances to get more goals. Those goals will really give Prince some confidence for the rest of the season.”
Cohen scored his second goal of the game in the 78th minute, but the Mustangs defense was able to contain the final 12-minute Spirit onslaught to secure the win.
The Master’s will next travel to Arizona Christian Saturday to take on the Firehawks for the final game of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
