Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies are organizing the second annual Santa Clarita Valley 10-33 Benefit Ride and Car Show, taking place Nov. 1.

The proceeds from the ride and car show are going to help the family of an 8-year-old Santa Clarita Valley boy recently diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, or DMD. The ride will start at 9 a.m. in Glendale, and the event will wrap up in Castaic at 3 p.m.

DMD is a form of dystrophy that causes increasing muscle weakness as a child ages, usually requiring them to use a wheelchair by the age of 12.

Deputy Robert Mahone was inspired to help out Deputy Ethan Marquez and his family because of the way Peyton seems unfazed by his sickness and determined to live life to his fullest, he said.

He recalled a video he saw of the boy when he jumped on stage and began dancing during a school talent show, while the boy who was supposed to be performing stood frozen with stage fright.

He didn’t care if everyone was watching him to help take the pressure of the nervous child next to him, Mahone said, putting him at ease to perform.

“This little boy, despite what he has, is just living it up,” Mahone said, “I just love that about him.”

It is a fatal disease with no cure, and patients typically live into their early 30s, according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The ride was started last year by Sheriff’s Station deputies to support Canyon High resource Deputy Devin Freeman and his family, who were paying thousands out of pocket on costs associated with his treatment for a rare cancer.

Freeman died in December at age 38.

“The mission of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s benefit ride is to provide assistance to the families of peace officers and firefighters, who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty, or who have a life threatening or incapacitating illness,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, in a previous interview.

The radio code for 10-33 designates an emergency call for an officer in need.

Peyton’s condition means he’ll soon enough need assistance with the stairs in the Marquez’ home, Mahone said, and the family is looking to install a lift to help him.

The cost is approximately $11,000, Mahone said, which deputies are hoping to raise with a November ride from the Glendale Harley Davidson shop to Castaic Lower Lake, where there will be food, including an In’N’Out truck, a DJ, a raffle and a display of some new and classic cars.

The cost of the ride is $35 for a single rider, and $45 for riders with a passenger. The fee is $35 to enter the car show, which is already set to include a 2014 Dodge Viper, a 2014 Z28 Camaro and others.

Mahone is more of the mechanic type who loves to build and fix up cars, so he’s organizing the car show event, while McPheeters is leading the ride, Mahone said.
