The city of Santa Clarita invites the community to join members of the Santa Clarita City Council for a special Veterans Day Ceremony to commemorate the centennial of the ending of World War I, as well as honor local veterans, currently-serving military and their families.

The ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Historical Plaza, located at 24275 N. Walnut Street in Newhall.

The ceremony will begin with the tolling of the Bells of Peace, which honor those who served and sacrificed in World War I and signify the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. Featured speakers include members of the Santa Clarita City Council, Chaplain Amos Clemmons and Ted Olsen, who will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

The event will include a reading of “In Flanders Field” by Vietnam veteran Jerry Rhodes and a performance of “Over There,” by Jerry Danielsen, Lisa Vig and Cynthia Moller. Both pieces were written during World War I.

The ceremony will also feature a special reading by Robert Heinisch as a sign of respect for those who are missing in action (MIA) or prisoners of war (POW) and an opportunity to hear from Lt. Colonel David M. Jackson, who served during Operation Desert Storm, as well as in Rwanda and Haiti. There will also be changing of the flags by the Knights of Columbus Santa Clarita Assembly and Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 355.

The Veterans Day Ceremony is a collaboration between the City of Santa Clarita and 1st Marine Division Associates, American Legion Post 507, American Legion Auxiliary, Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America, Back to the War Zone, Blue Star Moms of America (Santa Clarita Chapter CA46), College of the Canyons’ Veterans Program, Congressman Steve Knight’s Office, Disabled American Veterans, Eastern Costume, Elks Lodge 2379, Homes for Heroes, Knights of Columbus, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Prayer Angels for the Military, Santa Clarita Valley Veterans Memorial, Inc., Santa Clarita Veteran Services Collaborative, the Santa Clarita Valley Signal, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, V.F.W.
