1965 - Signal newspaper owner Scott Newhall shows up for a duel (of words) with rival Canyon Country newspaper publisher Art Evans, who no-shows and folds his paper soon after [story]
headline

The Palmdale Sheriff’s Station has the largest patrol area of all Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stations, covering an area approximately 1,300 square miles and serving more than a quarter of a million community members.  Our Off-Highway Vehicle team patrols the contract cities of Palmdale, Lancaster, and all the unincorporated county areas. The largest area of our responsibility lies in rural towns surrounding both cities.  Those areas include Acton, Agua Dulce, Antelope Acres, Leona Valley, Elizabeth Lake, Lake Hughes, Littlerock, Pearblossom, Llano, Lake Los Angeles and Wrightwood.  These townships make up over 1,100 square miles of rural desert and mountain areas.

The Palmdale OHV team has been active since the year 2000, initially concentrating on the issues within the city of Palmdale.  Over the many years the team’s area of patrol has grown to cover a vast area of Northern Los Angeles County.  Currently the Palmdale OHV team consists of one Lieutenant and three deputies and the Lancaster team consists of one sergeant and five deputies.  In addition to this, the Oriented Policing Services (OPS) Team, a county funded unincorporated quality of life unit, has a sergeant and two deputies whom assist with OHV patrol needs.  The Palmdale OHV team deploys on various weekends and holidays and is required to handle OHV complaints which are called in by the public.

The Palmdale Sheriff’s Station is currently applying for a grant through the California State Parks and Recreation.  The Grants and Cooperative Agreement Program allows for a 30-day public review and comment period. This period provides an opportunity for the public to review the preliminary applications submitted to the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division for consideration during the current grant cycle.  We encourage people to view the application and submit comments and questions.  Palmdale Station’s State Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Vehicle Grant Application can be viewed at Palmdale.lasd.org under Featured Services/Off Road Enforcement Program.

The Comments on the applications must be received between March 3, 2015 and April 6, 2015. The public may provide comments to both the Palmdale Station and the OHMVR Division by emailing jkacton@lads.org and carbon copying OHVinfo@parks.ca.gov.

    FYI SCV OFF-Roaders:
Make sure you guys bust all those off-roaders who have “illegal” gas containers (due to new laws) …but turn a blind eye to every gardener in both valleys that have the same ones and nothing’s done about that. Sheesh.

  2. Dave Hilton says:

Yeah worry about the thug problem, not the hard working folk that love to ride dirtbikes. If the city slickers dont like it, then I would suggest moving back to the city.

  3. Keith Dill says:

Who are they protecting and serving? Waste of money!

  4. Joey C Bavle says:

If you no how to ride then you’ll have no problem….kick up enough dust they’ll slow down.hit a good climb at a decent speed they’ll slow down….just remember they do shoot though.1 down 4 up

  5. Joey C Bavle says:

You see how many cops are standing on top of the rocks?more cops then bikes …you no why?cuz they didn’t ride up on them they needed help pushing them up there.

  6. Dave Hilton says:

Anyone can outrun them, its the chopper thats the problem. Then you will be arrested when finally caught. Just be cooperative with current registration, far from housing, and a spark arrestor. Will you get off with a warning.

  7. Dave Hilton says:

Joey C Bavle the extras are probably chopper pilots lol

  8. Waste of money. When I was a kid I out ran dirt bike cops half a dozen times.

  9. Nada Quinn says:

Tim Lopez this is your new gig

  10. Jimmy Grise says:

    get out of our town

  11. I would like to think that they are honoring Star Trek in that this is a location from one of fans’ favorites “The Arena.”

  12. Shane Weeks says:

Why does only one look like he likes his job?

  13. Joey Taira says:

There aren’t any colored folk up in this picture lol. Santa Clarita for ya lol.

  14. Greg Aliano says:

Yea. Lots of criminals riding dirt bikes. Dumb

    • Citizen Smith says:

If somebody rode their bikes up where all these dork cops are in the photo they would get a ticket. Take the photo in the parking lot…you know…the place where you are supposed to park. Unless the drug cartels have a new OHV dirt bike gang this is an incredible waste of money. How many workers comp cases have been files because cops fell off their bikes ?

  15. Please don’t hesitate to comment on the application. They are asking for 200k to patrol PRIVATE land and ride the same vehicle they call a nuisance in state parks 4 days per month. If they want less problems, open more riding areas. The area affected by the station fire has been closed since 2009 and neither the Mojave ranger district office nor the main Angeles forest service office have any information on a projected reopen date. Quite frankly its pathetic… Its our money let them know where we want it spent!

  16. Cody Evans says:

What a waste of time! Go after the drug dealers and people actually committing crimes! I don’t care what they say I’m still gonna do what I love and thats ride dirt bikes

  17. Cody Evans says:

they gotta be able to keep up to actually write a ticket lol

  18. Jay Bagge says:

Let them ride where we can’t. Sounds right

  19. It’s amazing how many critics can’t even spell correctly…

  20. Write yourselves tickets for riding a motor vehicle on top of the rocks in a protected area! Who’s dumb idea was that picture?

  21. Rick Linde says:

That’s you Randy. A chance to wear those assless chaps

  22. Joanna Ochoa says:

Juan Camilo trabajo perfecto para ti

  24. Todd Allen says:

Love pic of the rocks, our driveways was across from the entrance growing up

  25. Looks like the folks do not like the policeman in the dez

  26. Ulisses Leon says:

They are all racist cops out there in Pamdale and Lancaster racist pigs…!!

  27. Tony Bang says:

Bunch of pansies can’t even keep up with a 50.

  28. Richard Pena says:

Looks like a trigger happy committee retreat picture

  29. so cal guy says:

Agreed that the photo location probably wasn’t the best choice…maybe posting the photo where the entrance to the “rocks” is located that states “No Motorcycles” or “Private Property” or however its written…would have been a better choice.

  30. Ruining people’s fun. When I was growing up you could ride around at free will. Waste of money. FTP!!!

  31. Citizen Smith says:

And of course the email for the sheriffs doesn’t work…..

  32. Seems to me they have gotten out of hand. Even good clean fun is not legal in the AV anymore. You have to drive hrs to have fun. And who was the idiot that picked Vasquez rocks for the pics. That just shows their mentality.

  33. Bill Beck says:

Star Trek Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.

  34. Buzz killers. Druggies and illegals running around and these guys harass families out having fun. Glad to see Vazquez Rocks is safe.

  35. Ulisses Leon says:

Yea there the best they will kill you and lie on there report that it was your fault heros RIGHT ????..

  36. Ulisses Leon says:

Yea there the best they will kill you and lie on there report that it was your fault heros RIGHT ????..

  37. The hope is that they can help rather than hurt our off-road community. We hope that these guys will be there for us when we need them whether we’re injured, broke down, etc. I don’t agree about patrolling private property. I think if land owners around the SCV think that riding is a nuisance, they should pay for the cops on their dime. For those Land owners that DO let us ride. A sincere THANK YOU!!!! We appreciate your kindness to ALLOW us GRACIOUSLY to ride on your property.

  39. Len Green says:

I lived in Sand Canyon and now Acton. In Sand Canyon I saw my neighbors race back to their garages close the doors and then the sheriff’s bikes and SUVs came around the corner. No one gave them up and the sheriffs couldn’t figure out where they went. All counts where off roaders are. If I saw them on the pacific crest trail next to my house where I know its not allowed because of the horses and hikers I would have no problem with them doing something about it. Or if they get on my neighbors movie ranch which Its private property and can run a shoot. Yet I got my own quad to chase them off. That’s fun. I am surprised they were allowed to have the bikes up on those rocks though.

  40. Cody Hunt says:

I like how it’s seven people and three bikes. I guess they gotta ride doubles and leave one home.

  41. Ken Clark says:

I’m tired of seeing cops ride dirt bikes to chase kids who ride dirt bikes. Just like I hate seeing cops run top fuel cars. “Hey Johnny civilian you can’t do it, but come watch us use your tax dollars to do it.”

  42. Pat Huston says:

What a great job to have.

  43. How is their riding their bikes onto the rocks okay? Realtors also need to stop posting and selling the concept of “Bring your toys!” to sell houses. I feel lied too. It’s a touchy subject, so I’ll stop. Yes, I’m a biker and I love and respect horses too!

  44. That’s so awesome! Thank you for being there for the public!

  45. Rich says:

Adding patrol to the area will not cure complaints to the area for proposed patrol areas. Allocating money to reopen closed legal riding areas will. It would be nice to have a local riding area for friends and family.

  46. Carli says:

A minute saved is a minute eander, and this saved hours!
