For 89 minutes Tuesday night, the College of the Canyons women’s soccer team dominated the time of possession but could not put together a scoring play.
But with just over a minute left to play, sophomore Hailey Phipps delivered a powerful kick from 16 yards outside the box, just beyond the reach of the opposing goalkeeper, to give the Cougars (8-2) a dramatic 1-0 win over visiting Moorpark College (3-7-1).
Five minutes into the match the Cougars had their first scoring opportunity as Alondra Solis took a cross in the box, but her one-timer was blocked by the keeper.
Crystal Sanchez had two scoring opportunities in the first half — one at the 32-minute mark and another with five minutes left — but both shots went wide.
With 18 minutes remaining in the first half, the Cougars were able to find the back of the net, but the goal was negated by an offside call.
Canyons was able to maintain a dominant edge in possession throughout the half as keeper Jordan Burrow was challenged just once at the five-minute mark. She was up to the challenge though, and was able to make the easy save.
The second half featured more of the same for the Cougars. Sanchez delivered three more shots that went wide of the goal, the first coming just two minutes into the half.
With 38 minutes left to play, it appeared that Moorpark was on its way to scoring its first goal on a breakaway, but Burrow came out nearly 10 yards beyond the box to slow down the play and ultimately make a game-saving stop.
The Cougars had a golden opportunity to score with 19 minutes remaining when Solis took a free kick from three yards beyond the box, but her shot found the keeper’s hands.
COC was finally able to break through with just over a minute left as Sanchez took a free kick from well beyond the box and delivered a perfect short pass to Phipps who finished off the only goal of the match.
Here’s the box score.
The Cougars improved to 8-2 on the season and will return to action on Friday, Oct. 6, when they host L.A. Pierce College. Kickoff is set for 5:30 pm.
