Preseason Big West Media Poll Release
NORTHRIDGE, CA – Senior Tavrion Dawson was selected to the Preseason All-Big West Conference Team, as voted upon by a 26-member media panel. The Matadors were also picked to finish seventh in the Big West Conference.
Named a Big West Honorable Mention last season, Dawson enjoyed a career year with the Matadors in 2016-17. Posting new personal bests across the board, Dawson finished tops on the team in rebounds per game (6.9) and second in points per game (14.1), and shot an exceptional 52.1 percent from the floor and 34.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Dawson also registered new career highs in assists (1.6), steals (1.6) and minutes (29.9). He racked up six double-doubles during the year along with two Big West Player of the Week nods.
Among the Big West leaders, Dawson was the only player in the conference to average at least 14.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists for the season.
Earlier this month, Dawson was placed on College Sports Madness’ Big West First Team while fellow senior Micheal Warren earned a spot on the Fourth Team.
Picked to finish seventh by the media, the Matadors finished sixth in the Big West last season and 7-9 in conference play. Despite the finish, the Matadors competed for a Big West title until the final weeks of the year and enjoyed several highlights during the conference season. CSUN posted its best conference start since 2008 by going 3-0 and earned season sweeps over Long Beach State, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.
Head coach Reggie Theus enters his fifth season with the Matadors in 2017-18. Theus led the Matadors back to the Big West Conference Tournament last season and also to the team’s most road wins in six years.
