Quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw three touchdown passes and running back Max Archuleta scored on a 72-yard run as Canyon defeated Camarillo 52-28 Friday night at Harry Welch Stadium.
The start of the game was delayed an hour due to lightning in the area. It received a second delay of 20 minutes late in the first half when Camarillo defensive end Jameson Sperling had to be taken off the field on a stretcher in precaution over a possible neck injury. He was moving all extremities.
Jerozal completed 16 of 26 passes for 281 yards. Two of his touchdown strikes went to Coley Apsay, who finished a career night with eight catches for 152 yards.
Canyon recevier Drew Wolitarsky became the all-time leading receiver in terms of yardage, surpassing Sean Coen’s eight-year old record. Coen hauled in 2,600 yards of passes from 2001 to 2003. Wolitarsky, just a junior, now has 2,633 yards. He caught four passes for 55 yards against the Scorpions.
Canyon (3-0) had a 21-0 lead at halftime when Camarillo (1-2) scored on their first possession of the second half. Sophomore quarterback Michael Marin connected with 6-foot-7 wide receiver Jake Maulhardt for a 25-yard score. Maulhardt finished with 28 catches on the night for 360 yards and three touchdowns.
But Canyon answered right back when Archuleta broke off his 72-yard touchdown run. Every score by the Scorpions in the second half was answered by the Cowboys.
The Canyon game was SCVTV’s Cloud49 Game of the Week and can be seen throughout the week on Time Warner Cable Channel 20 and AT&T U-verse 99, and streaming on SCVTV.com. Check the schedule in the right-hand column for showtimes.
