The Sand Fire in the Santa Clarita Valley has grown to 20,000 acres with 10 percent containment throughout Saturday with more mandatory evacuations in effect.
Officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are in unified command for the fire. The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, American Red Cross and California Highway Patrol are assisting.
One structure has been destroyed.
Evacuations include all residents in the Sand Canyon area from Lost Canyon Road to Robinson Ranch Golf Course; all residents in Placerita Canyon from the Placerita Canyon Nature Center to Sand Canyon Road; and Little Tujunga Canyon Road from Bear Divide to the Los Angeles River Ranger District Station, 12371 Little Tujunga Canyon Road.
The evacuations include about 1,500 homes and 100 commercial buildings.
Road Closures include no entry into Sand Canyon and Soledad Canyon; Sand Canyon at northbound 14 Freeway; Sand Canyon and Lost Canyon; Placerita Canyon at the 14 Freeway; Soledad Canyon Road eastbound from the 14 Freeway; Agua Dulce Canyon Road eastbound from the 14 Freeway; Crown Valley Road eastbound from the 14 Freeway; and Sand Canyon Road east of Placerita Canyon to 12300 Little Tujunga.
Evacuation Centers have been set up at Golden Valley High School, 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway; Hart High School 24825 Newhall Avenue, enter the back parking lot via Kansas Street; and Lakeview Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd, Lakeview Terrace, 91340.
The Wayside Jack Bones Equestrian Center and Hansen Dam in Sylmar are receiving large animals.
Crews are using fixed wing aircraft and helicopters to battle the fire, located in the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains.
The brush fire began in the wash on the southeast side of the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Sand Canyon Road around 2:11 p.m.
Concerts in the Park in Saugus is cancelled Saturday evening.
