fireworks3As the dust settles from the Fourth of July, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies would like to thank the residents we serve for partnering with us during an extremely busy Fourth of July, Friday night.  Last night was extremely busy for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and Los Angeles County Fire Department.  The Sheriff’s Department had special teams deployed to combat the use of illegal fireworks and respond to calls for service.

Each year in the Santa Clarita Valley, Los Angeles County firefighters along with deputies respond to fires resulting from the use of illegal fireworks. Our community is one of the most beautiful places to live, but we live in what is called the “urban interface” surrounded by brush covered canyons and hillsides, which makes our neighborhood’s vulnerable to the threat of fire.  This year, the terrain is especially dry due to drought conditions.

On Friday, July 4, 2014, at approximately 12:35 pm, deputies and Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the area of Fourl Road and Wiley Canyon Road in Newhall.  A fire was reported in an alley, allegedly started by illegal fireworks.  The fire was quickly extinguished.

fireworks4During the late evening hours on Friday, July 4, 2014, deputies arrested Jorge Sanchez, a 36-year-old male.  Mr. Sanchez was arrested in the area of Sierra Highway and Jakes Way in Canyon Country, for allegedly throwing a large bottle at Los Angeles County Fire Paramedics.  The paramedics saw Mr. Sanchez because he was standing in the middle of the street and was allegedly intoxicated.  Mr. Sanchez was booked at Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 1:36 am on felony charges.

Over the past two days, deputies have responded to numerous calls for service regarding fireworks.  Early Morning Shift (starting the night of 07-03-14), from 9:00 pm until 3:00 am, deputies responded to 32 calls for service specifically dealing with illegal fireworks.

Early Morning Shift (starting the night of 07-04-14), from 9:00 pm until 4:00 am, deputies responded to 208 calls for service specifically dealing with illegal fireworks.  That is on top of other routine calls for service.

Sixty pounds of illegal fireworks were confiscated by deputies last night and were delivered to Los Angeles County Fire Station 126 for disposal.

  1. That’s it? The guy down the street let off more than that last night.

  2. Rita Caso says:

I wish they confiscated 60 pounds of heroin… Would have been more helpful :(

  3. Ala Timeline says:

can we have a 5th of july where the sheriffs just set off all the illegal stuff they got? :)

  4. The cops took the rest home

  5. Carson Lega says:

    It’s for their kids

  6. John Evarts says:

Which cops took it? We can go party with them.

  7. Bubba Fkng G says:

    Police hard at work

  8. 208 fireworks related calls! That’s on top of the regular calls? No wonder they didn’t get to all of the problems areas. Too many scofflaws, too few officers.

  9. Yep. Same here…cop next door to me…fireworks…partying..my poor animals are traumatized…should have filmed them…then I could turn them in

  10. It’s always so bizarre when people comment without reading the story, so they don’t know what they’re commenting about. Read the story and you’ll find out what happened with the fireworks. And you’ll read about the guy who assaulted the firefighter. (Which, judging from some of these comments, is apparently OK?)

  11. My house is not burned to the ground and we had no brush fires. Thank you!!

  12. I still enjoyed myself and let off my fireworks with no problem or cops trying to ruin the way we have been celebrating the 4th of July for years and still will do the same years to come…good day

  13. I live on Fourl Rd and my house backs up to the alley. Thank you to our firefighters for taking care of the fire last night before it destroyed my house or any of my neighbors houses!!

  14. So what. ..I got a free show from my porch!!

  15. Someone set some off about 10-ish last night, near Le Chene, no cops, of course….

  20. Freedom!!!!!!!! Oh, my bad lol not in America where there are more laws and incarcerated citizens than any other country on the planet.

  21. I live off Camp Plenty and there were a few amazing displays of professional fireworks in our neighborhood. Does anyone else notice that the people firing them never do it over their own homes? It was pretty scary with everything so dry. Especially frightening was the apparent misfire that shot very low over a neighbor’s home.

  22. 60 pounds is about five to seven boxes of mortars but SCVTV the propaganda arm of the City has swung into action because the social media storm has already started.

  23. Jonah Stacey says:

I can’t say anything bad because the Facebook staff and cops are monitor our comment. So I have no comment.

  24. Yeah, because celebrating the 4th is a crime.

  25. Josh Larson says:

Censored by my own home city. Guess I’m on your guy’s side of the issue considering I can’t have an opinion.

  26. Paul Mahone says:

It shouldn’t be allowed to be called independence any more.

  27. Ron Estes says:

I really appreciated the police flying down our residential street at 35 MPH…without ANY lights on. Must be to keep the kids safe.

  28. Them dirty bastards.

  29. Well they could have got more than that on my street! Went on until 12pm. :(

  30. In venice they were flyin helicopter surveillance…theorhetically…they could photograph and mail you your citation…jus sayin…

  31. This is why we took our sparklers to the beach

  32. Drake Monast says:

you all been rick rolled http://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ lol lol lol

  33. Move to the midwest ur aloud all the fireworks in the pic

  34. I don’t understand what the big deal is! Fireworks are fun as long as no one gets hurt and no fires start. The fact they are illegal in LA County and legal in Ventura county is ridiculous
