[News Release] – On Saturday, West Ranch High School presents Super Jazz at the Ranch. Jazz bands from across the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas will converge at West Ranch High School for what promises to be an outstanding day of jazz. Top adjudicators that include active professional musicians, and notable jazz educators, will be on hand to evaluate jazz ensembles from the Hart District, and other schools from around Southern California.
Super Jazz at the Ranch is an annual jazz festival, created by noted music educator, Bob Babko, to bring professional and student musicians together. Babko, an inductee in the California Alliance for Jazz Hall of Fame in recognition of his dedication to music education, established the Super Jazz music festival over a decade ago, as one of his many endeavors to provide local jazz students with extraordinary opportunities to perform and learn.
The festival includes a full day of jazz performances in the West Ranch High School Theater, Library, and outdoor Amphitheater, by junior high jazz bands, high school jazz combos and high school jazz bands. The first groups are on at 8:30 a.m. and run continuously until 7:30 p.m., culminating with a special guest performance, and an awards ceremony.
Highlights of the festival include Dan Fornero conducting clinics for students, and as a guest performer, he will be featured with the West Ranch Studio A Jazz Band. Dan is one of Los Angeles’ “top call” trumpet players for studio recordings, and currently plays lead trumpet in Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, as well as the Bob Mintzer Big Band.
The Hart District Jazz “All-Stars” a group composed of some of the most talented jazz students from around the district, will perform under the direction of UCLA Jazz Orchestra Director Charley Harrison.
The Festival finale will be the evening guest performance, featuring the duo of Russ Ferrante and Scott Jeppesen. Russ is the founding keyboard member of the Grammy winning Yellowjackets, and Scott is a local, soon to be saxophone star. His first CD release, “El Guapo,” earned a 3.5 star review in the acclaimed jazz magazine DownBeat.
All day general admission is $10, and admission for Students and Seniors is $7. Food concessions will be available onsite. Updated information will be available at www.westranchmusic.com and at www.facebook.com/WRHSBandBoosters.
