[Saugus Union School District] – The Saugus Union School District announces its annual Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten Round-Up Week, which officially opens the enrollment period for these two grades in the District.
Round-Up Week runs from Monday, Feb. 22 to Friday, Feb. 26 and serves as the pre-registration period for new students moving into the District or those that are ready to start in a public school setting. Click here for your home school information and plan to enroll your child next week.
The age requirement for kindergarten is children turning five by Sept. 1, while transitional kindergarten is for children that turn five between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2.
Transitional kindergarten is a bridge to kindergarten for children who, because of the timing of their birthday, aren’t eligible for kindergarten but parents still want to provide a more structured academic introduction to schooling. It is the first of a two-year program that leads to kindergarten the following year.
“We are proud to offer a full day TK and kindergarten programs,” said Dr. Joan Lucid, superintendent of Saugus Union School District. “Our highly-qualified dedicated teachers guide our newest students as they develop a love of life-long learning.”
All applications require an original birth certificate or passport and health information, including verification of immunization against: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis; polio; measles, mumps, rubella; hepatitis B; varicella; bacterial meningitis and a dental screening. Forms will be available at time of registration. As of Jan. 1, 2016, waivers for personal belief exemptions will no longer be permitted in accordance with SB 277. For more information, see SB277 FAQs at www.shotsforschool.org.
Additionally, proof of residency will be required with two of the following acceptable forms: utility bills, contracts, statement or payment receipts with address; lease, escrow or rental papers with address; property tax statements; pay stub and voter registration.
The Saugus Union School District serves the Santa Clarita communities of Saugus, Valencia and Canyon Country with 15 elementary schools. The school was recently awarded Gold Ribbon Awards for 14 of 15 schools, and these awards continue a tradition of excellence for the District, which includes five National Blue Ribbon Awards, 35 California Distinguished School Awards and six California Business for Educational Excellence Awards.

My grandson will be five (5) on December 10th. He is beyond ready academically for Kindergarten, from a language arts to mathematics perspective, he is ready willing and very capable of the kindergarten curricula.
However, he was born into a military family and has moved several times. So he is a little behind socially, which I believe the TK program will be just perfect for Matix & his needs. Can he start TK this fall since he is but a week shy of being 5 on December 3rd of this year(?). I hate to hold him back as he desperately needs the socialization skills versus waiting until he is almost 6.
How do we go about this (enrolling into TK with 5th birthday on Dec 10)? My daughter and SIL are out of the military now and are settling in canyon country.
Thank you for your assistance and direction.
Respectfully
Michelle K
