California Highway Patrol-Newhall officers are sharing safety tips for motorists with temperatures expected to drop below freezing Tuesday night over the Grapevine.
The temperature and 40 percent chance of precipitation brings the strong possibility of slick roads. Slow down, black ice is very difficult to see and negotiate.
In the event the I-5 closes to vehicular traffic, it will be closed northbound in Castaic and southbound at the base of the Grapevine.
Traffic needing to go south should take a detour by using eastbound SR-58 through Tehachapi to SR-14.
Traffic going north can take SR-14 northbound through Palmdale and Lancaster to SR-58 westbound.
Waiting it out in Castaic is not recommended due to the high volume of big rigs that will be waiting there. The fewer vehicles in the area, the better.
Once I-5 closes, it is unknown how long the road will be closed for, but it will reopen when it is safe.
This holiday, plan your travel accordingly and check for weather forecasts. If it looks like the weather will turn nasty, have an alternate plan in mind.
